Career paths

  • positions in the pharmaceutical industry in drug production, marketing of drug development.

Professional accreditation

This course is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council.

To become a registered pharmacist, graduates of this course must complete one year of supervised practical training and the Intern Training Program in order to register with the Pharmacy Board of Australia. International students will need to demonstrate an IELTS score of 7.5 or equivalent.

What you’ll study

The Master of Pharmacy is a postgraduate coursework degree that will prepare you for all aspects of the pharmacy profession, including leadership in innovative and evidence-based practice. Graduates from this course will be eligible to register with the Pharmacy Board of Australia after completing 1824 hours (one year) of supervised practical training and an Intern Training Program. You will complete core units in pharmacy, including professional practice and experiential placement, and a capstone unit in your final semester.

Professional practice

The mandatory Work Integrated Learning program includes clinical placements which provide real-life opportunities for students to experience the roles that pharmacists play in contemporary healthcare environments. Clinical placements occur in both years of the Master of Pharmacy degree. By the completion of the Master of Pharmacy course, students will have been exposed to a wide variety of practice settings, including community pharmacy and hospital settings, in a range of different geographical locations where demographically diverse patients access healthcare .

Clinical placement checks and clearances

Before you can attend a placement in a clinical setting, you need to have certain clinical placement checks and clearances. The checks can be completed after your enrolment in the course.

Qualifications

Mandatory for course entry

To be eligible to apply for the Master of Pharmacy applicants will need to fulfill the following criteria:

  1. A bachelor's degree from an Australian institution or equivalent
  2. A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA), currently 5.0 over 7.0 (equivalent to 65% at USYD), or Graduate Australian Medical Admissions Test (GAMSAT), currently 55 with 50 in each section, or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), currently 8 (previous test version) / 500 (new test version).
  3. 48 credit points, or equivalent, in six prerequisite subjects at university level (see below) 
  4. English language proficiency of IELTS 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each band (if relevant)

Admission pathway

  • Course transfers from current Master of Pharmacy programs across Australia will be considered. Subject exemptions are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • International pharmacy graduates with registration from outside of Australia are accepted provided pharmacy registration has been within the last ten years. It is not a requirement to have a GPA, MCAT or GAMSAT for this application.
  • Applicants with relevant professional experience (eg pharmaceutical industry or related research area) within the last ten years will be considered on a case-by-case basis. It is not a requirement to have a GPA, MCAT or GAMSAT for this application.

All prerequisite subjects must have been completed in the last ten years. Students can enrol in the program with 12 credit points of prerequisite subjects outstanding as long as these subjects are completed by the end of the first year of the Master of Pharmacy program. 

All applicants are also required to submit a supplementary form as part of their application.

When completing the form, please list all associated subjects you have completed (or you are enrolled to complete) at a University level within the last 10 years that you believe may be related to the pre-requisite requirements. Assessment on pre-requisite knowledge will be based on the subjects you have listed on this form.  You must nominate at least 36 credit points of pre-requisites out of the required 48 credit points before your form can be assessed.

Before applying

All applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of, a bachelor degree in order to be considered for admission. The bachelor degree must be completed by the time of enrolment for the year in which the applicant intends to commence the Master of Pharmacy program.

Applicants who have undertaken a bachelor degree in an accelerated program are eligible to apply only after completion of the full degree.

As part of applying for this course you will need to include the following documentation with your application for admission.

  • complete a supplementary application form. To download the form visit https://sydney.edu.au/content/dam/courses/medicine-and-health/mpharm-application-supplementary-form.pdf. You must nominate at least 36 credit points of pre-requisites out of required 48 credit points before your form can be assessed. Please list all associated subjects you have completed at University level within the last 10 years (or are on track to complete) that you believe may be related to the prerequisite requirements. Assessment on prerequisite knowledge will be based on the subjects you have listed on this form.  
  • provide unit descriptions for all prerequisite subjects listed on your Supplementary Form. The unit description should be an official description from the University website or the Student Handbook from the institution where you complete the units. Please ensure to include the unit description for all of the units you have listed on your Supplementary form which match the unit name and unit code listed on your academic transcript. Please compile all unit descriptions into a single document and upload together with official English translations (if applicable). 
  • provide evidence of your official overseas Pharmacy Registration issued within the last ten years (if applicable). If the document is issued in a language other than English, please provide the original together with an official English translation. You will not need to provide unit outlines if you can provide your overseas Pharmacy Registration. 
  • If you have recently completed Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), please provide a copy of your official results.

Below is a standard list of documents that you will need to include with your application for admission. These documents are in addition to any specific documents/requirements (e.g. supplementary forms) which if applicable will be listed above.

  • Proof of identity: a valid passport (biodata page). Alternatively, an Australian birth certificate or Australian or New Zealand citizenship certificate for domestic students.
  • Current or final official academic transcripts and their official English translation copy if the original transcripts were issued in a language other than English. Currently enrolled University of Sydney students do not need to provide a copy of their transcript(s). Credit transcript(s) may be required if you were granted credit for studies previously undertaken.
  • Final testamur or proof of completion of your qualification and its official English translation copy if it was issued in a language other than English.
  • Proof of English proficiency (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL results) where required.
  • For courses with mandatory prerequisites, official detailed unit outlines for all prerequisite units in your studies which you believe will meet the prerequisite requirements.
