Professor Alexandra Martiniuk

Martiniuk has expertise in Epidemiology, Health systems and services research, Implementation and evaluation of complex interventions, Indigenous and global child health.

Martiniuk is committed to using mixed-methods research to increase equitable access to high quality health care for children locally and globally. Addressing treatment disparities (unwanted variation) offers a substantial return on initial scientific investments.

She was awarded the Australian Academy of Sciences 2020 Gustav Nossal Medal for Global Health and is the recipient of 29 additional awards and 6 fellowships.

Martiniuk has a total of 213 publications (including 21 reports to government and industry). She has received funding as a Chief Investigator from: NHMRC, ARC, CIHR, SSHRC, IDRC, CIDA, WHO, Government (eg Ontario Ministry of Health, NSW Health), Philanthropy and Innovation/Commercialisation funds (including venture capital funding). Martiniuk has formally supervised 67 research trainees including postdocs, PhDs, Masters’ and medical students. She writes for and has been quoted in the media including: the SMH, The Diplomat, Reuters, MSN, Xinhua, Washington Post, the Guardian, the Conversation, ABC, CBC etc.

Her work has included: a long-standing partnership with colleagues in Fitzroy Valley communities in WA to improve health and health services for children; research regarding models of care for children with neurodevelopmental conditions; care for children with cancer, HIV and epilepsy; outbreak investigations in Canada and Honduras; analyses of the Ontario and NSW health system responses to COVID; implementation and evaluation of programs and services for children with mental health needs - to name a few. She has led consultancies with: WHO, Health Systems Global, AusAID, NSW Health, NSW Rural Doctors Network, Royal Far West, and others. Prior to becoming an epidemiologist, Martiniuk worked for the Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Center in paediatric oncology at the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario.
